![]() Here's another picture I had lying around for many weeks. This is the back side of the New York State capitol building. For anyone interested in the history of American institutional architecture there is no finer spot to be than Capitol Park which is just to the right of this shot. Behind me as I took this picture is the Greek Revival State Education Building, to the far right (the west side of the park) is the Alfred E. Smith Office Building which is a fine example of Art Deco architecture (it reminds me of the Daily Planet Building in the old Superman comics). To the south of the park is the sprawling Empire State Plaza (also shown in the previous link), built in the late 1960s by then Governor Nelson Rockefeller and one of the great pieces of modern architecture in New York. And of course the capitol itself, which is one of the nicest Richardsonian, late 19th century buildings around. Currently the capitol is undergoing a complete re-roofing project. There is a PBS show produced locally about the project which if you ever get a chance to watch is well worth the time. I looked for but could not find a link to it. | |
