Old Friends
EXIF: KONICA MINOLTA MAXXUM 5D | 1/50 sec | f 5.6 | 70.0mm (35mm equivalent: 105.0mm) | ISO 100

It was a chilly day Saturday, but I felt a need to get out and shoot some pictures. So I drove over the Troy to see what I could find. I wandered a bit, took a few shots but was dissatisfied with most of them. I was studying a window front when these two women passed me. I was taken with the way they were so deeply engaged in their conversation as the help one another along the cold city street.

Two resolves for this year. More people in my pictures. More of what Ana at Shutterfly calls 'blah blah blahing.' The latter you may find interesting or not. But I have been inspired by a few sites that combine excellent prose with excellent photography and hope to move in that direction myself. It may take some time to get there, but it is a serious goal for 2006.

Addendum 01/02/2006

It is impossible to point to all the great inspiration out there for combining words and pictures. In recent weeks I have found that Ana's site has done a great job of making me think about who I am and what I am capable of making out of my life, todays post 'Defrosting Me,' being a perfect example of what I mean. Over the months I have been reading Carmen Sisson's work at Cloudybright, I have been moved beyond belief by the power and beauty of both her pictures and her use of language to evoke gut wrenching emotion. One example among many: Hope Flickers.

But it is not always poetry or prose that speaks to the soul that I am drawn towards. Sometimes there is a story to be told about the particular picture, not as a symbol of other things, but simply to better understand and appreciate the context for the picture. I know lots of people feel their art expresses the meaning without words, and there is no doubt in my mind that there is truth to that for many. But there are also many pictures I look at and wonder ... what is the story there? I hope be telling more stories in the coming year.
