The Egg
EXIF: KONICA MINOLTA MAXXUM 5D | 1/640 sec | f 6.3 | 30.0mm (35mm equivalent: 45.0mm) | ISO 100

Another of Albany's distinctive architectural features. Popularly known as 'The Egg,' it houses the New York State Performing Arts Center with the Kitty Carlisle Theatre (yep, Kitty Carlisle of 'What's My Line' fame! -- only the old folks will remember her I suppose).

Update Mid-Day February 1, 2006

A few people have asked about the overall context for this structure. This is from the north looking south across the plaza. The large building is the Corning Tower, the tallest building in Albany. I thought I had posted others of the Egg, but I guess I have not. The Empire State Plaza consists of several buildings on a large 'Podium' that overlooks the downtown portion of the city. The Corning Tower and the Egg stand out front and then behind them are four 'Agency' buildings, flanked by a legislative office building and the headquarters for the State Department of Motor Vehicles. Altogether, it is a massive piece of governmental architecture. I first experienced it shortly after returning from a three month expedition to Egypt and all that I equate this massive public works projects to is something like the Pyramids. Here is a distant shot of the complex at night, you may be able to make out the Egg to the right of the tall building.
