EXIF: KONICA MINOLTA MAXXUM 5D | 1/30 sec | f 8.0 | 70.0mm (35mm equivalent: 105.0mm) | ISO 100

I was able to get out a bit this weekend in the freezing cold and do some shooting, but so far have not spent time working on the new stuff. So here is a little piece from a few weeks ago. I have posted lots of pictures recently of several of the individual buildings seen in this image. To the far left the modern State Museum building and the spires of the Catholic Cathederal. The tall Corning Tower, the central focal point of the Empire State Plaza, dominates the skyline. Behind the tower are the four 'Agency buildings' and to the right of the tower the Egg, which I have shown in several closeup shots over the past few weeks. Finally, towards the right is the Art Deco A.E Smith State Office Building.

Basically, in this picture we encapsulate the heart of the New York State government.

The official name of the complex of modern structures is the Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza. For those not familiar with Nelson Rockefeller, he was governor of the state for many years, and after Gerald Ford assumed the Presidency following Richard Nixon's resignation, he became the Vice President of the United States. As I have written before, the scale of this complex is difficult to fathom. As a monument to a man, it is truly phenomenal. I will leave it to the historians to judge whether he was worthy of such a statement. (I should point out that this complex was his vision and was conceived and constructed during his tenure as governor.)
