![]() This bridge was typical of many that were built along the Erie Canal during the mid 1800's. This particular one was saved from destruction by the Engineering students at Union College and relocated from its original site to a permanent location across the old canal at the entrance to the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve. According to the signs: Built by Squire Whipple across the enlarged Erie Canal at Sprakers in 1869. This type of bridge was adopted by the Canal Commissioners in the 1850s as the standard iron bridge to cross the canal. It has been nearly a month since I made a WOW Award. Between work and the better weather of spring, I have been spending a lot less time visiting new blogs or even, for that matter, hanging around my regular sites. I have been a longtime follower of Owen's work at Blearyeyes, so it came as no surprise to me to find one of those shots that just stopped me as I was cruising this evening, not really looking for anything special, but just catching up with my long backlog on Bloglines. I think what I really like about Rust, Rivets, and Rope is the repetitive patterns and the contrast between the clear metal brackets and the rusty beams. Great shot Owen! ![]() | |
