![]() Another shot from the canal lock. I failed to mention yesterday that this particular canal is the direct descendant of the original Erie Canal. It has gone through some major changes over the years. There are still portions of the original canal -- known at the time as 'Clinton's Ditch' -- though in most places it was replaced by several subsequent generations. The current canal largely follows the route of the Mohawk River in the eastern part of the state where there are a series of dams (below the bridge in this picture) that are used to control the height of the river between the locks. The current canal serves recreational boaters and those interested in getting their large boats from the Atlantic Ocean into the Great Lakes (or vice versa). In the summer it is a fun place to watch the boats as they 'lock through.' A few weeks ago, while my mother was here, we were looking at the boats docked in Waterford and noted one that was from Colorado Springs! If you know your geography, you know that there is no way you can travel by boat from Waterford to Colorado. Turns out the boat owners were indeed from Colorado Springs, but they travel every year on their boat. Still seems to me that a boat should identify where IT is from, not the owners. But that may just be me. | |
