Fern Forest
EXIF: KONICA MINOLTA MAXXUM 5D | 1/15 sec | f 5.6 | 18.0mm (35mm equivalent: 27.0mm) | ISO 100

On September 19, 1777, weeks before the final faceoff in October, Burgoyne moved his troops towards the encamped American forces. One of three columns advanced through the virgin forests along the same trail I followed (well, probably not the very same trail, but in the same general location).

War and conflict are such an integral part of human history. I have oft wondered of the reasons behind our desires to memorialize places once the site of such violence and human suffering. Since beginning these posts a few days ago, I have pondered this and thought I had intelligent speculations to offer. But as I sit here tapping out these words, I find that I am no more understanding of why we do this than I ever have been. Is it, as Micki suggested yesterday, a way to honor those who have sacrificed for us? Or is a glorification of military posturing? I have no answer, nor am I even sure of how to pose the question. I only know that contemplation on fields of battle like this fill me with a sense of uneasiness that I am not confortable with.
