Anyway, this morning I pulled one of the few shots I got while in Indianapolis, not because it is a particularly wonderful photograph -- it is ok, I suppose -- but because of the circumstances. Yesterday after I checked out from the hotel and before the afternoon sessions at the conference, I finally got my camera out and hit the streets of central Indianapolis. I was standing on the road taking a picture when I heard someone calling to me, 'Mr. photographer!' he said. I looked up and saw a bank security guard approaching me. 'Oh no,' I thought, 'Now I will have to get into it with him about how I am within my rights to do this.' 'Are you a photographer?' he asked as he reached me. I looked down at my camera and said, 'Yes.' 'I mean, are you a professional or an amateur?' (As if that would matter?) I acknowledged that I was an amateur, and expected some long lecture about 'security' and 'property rights'...yadda yadda. But instead, he pointed to a doorway and said, 'If you go to the roof of that parking garage the buildings open up real nice and you can take a shot of the circle!' [the circle being the central tower memorial of downtown Indianapolis - now bedecked fro the Christmas season.] While I was not particularly interested in shooting the circle, I took his advice and indeed the buildings did 'open nicely' and gave me this perspective. So here is a story of a man who was proud of his city and happy to share a special spot he knew about. I went looking for him when I game down to thank him, but he was nowhere to be found.
