![]() In a few weeks, Jamestown will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the landing at the first permanent British settlement in the so-called New World. Last week, I had the great honor of getting a behind the scenes tour of the excavations that have been going on there since about 1994. One of my early archaeological employers, Bill Kelso, discovered the site of the old fort and has been doing work there ever since. For those of us who grew up in Virginia, the common story was that the old fort had been lost to erosion many many years ago. In fact, as the recent excavations have clearly demonstrated, the site of the fort was still there, just long forgotten. This shot was taken from the newly opened Archaereum (fancy name for 'museum' I think) looking up towards the area of the original fort. Parts of the original palisade wall have been reconstructed. In a few weeks they are having a major celebration and, as I understand it, Queen Elizabeth will be visiting. | |
