![]() Inside the original palisade line, the excavations continue. The thick layer of earth to the right is a Civil War period fortification that actually cut right across the site of the original fort. While lots and lots of early 17th Century artifacts have been recovered from that later feature, unfortunately is is all ripped from its original context. Fortunately, however, beneath the embankment, the remains of the original site are still virtually intact and have revealed enormous information about the earliest years of the settlement. If anyone has an interest in early American history, this is a must-see site. If you were there more than a couple of years ago, go again. It has totally changed! | |
