Up in the Clouds
EXIF: KONICA MINOLTA MAXXUM 5D | 1/125 sec | f 5.6 | 50.0mm (35mm equivalent: 75.0mm) | ISO 100

I returned from my second extended trip to Tennessee very late last night (actually early this morning). Yesterday's 'big event' went well. Our system worked flawlessly and even successfully detected a vehicle with a seriously bad tire while a group was getting a demonstration of how it worked. That was perhaps the hit event of the day. It was hot and humid for those of us that had to stay outside for the entire day manning the vendor booths (in a big tent).

I made good use of my weekend in Tennessee and spent Saturday at the oldest town in the state and Sunday up in the Smoky Mountains. This picture was taken at the summit of Clingman's Dome, which at 6,643 feet above sea level is the highest peak in the National Park and the third highest peak on the east coast of the US. As happens quite commonly at this location, the clouds hung low and I was 'cheated' of the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

One sad fact of life at the high elevations on the east coast is the invasion of balsam wooly agelid which is an introduced species of insects that has already killed about 75% of the Fraser fir trees in the park (and elsewhere as well.) The hulks of these trees paint a stark landscape.

I hope to get some processing done in the next few days and will post more shots from my recent trip.
