EXIF: SONY DSLR-A700 | 1/500 sec | f 5.0 | 11.0mm (35mm equivalent: 16.0mm) | ISO 200

Ok, my last shot from Denver.

Which also puts me in awkward position. I have not done any shooting recently. In one of those slumps, which has been exacerbated by two unrelated events. First, I am supposed to be taking part in the SoFoBoMo between April and May, but have been drawing a total blank with respect to inspiration and motivation as to theme for the book. I have had a few thoughts, but as yet have not settled on anything. The second thing was my recent entry into the Capital District Photo Regional. I had entered five of the more well received images from forgingahead...but in the end none were selected for the show. I went to a talk by the jurist for the show last night and could tell early on that my style of photography would not be that compatible with hers. Can't say that is why my shots were not accepted, but I certainly think that there is a strong element that distinguishes the 'artistic' photographer from whatever it is that I do.

We all hear the phrase, 'finding our photographic voice' as we mature in our work. I can look around (and have) at many fellow photoblogger's work and see how some have a 'voice,' or at least what I have generally thought of as a voice. But in listening to Jacqueline Hayden, the jurist, I began to frame a totally different concept of what 'voice' means in art. It is not about subjects, or style, or technique, or even media...but about how we use our art to express meaning or emotion that is unique to who we are. And that is really tough.

I'm not sure where this new 'revelation' will lead me...or when. I suspect I will trip along as I have for nearly three years now, slapping out one picture after another that may or may not convey feeling and meaning. But I think if I am to find a way to keep my photography fresh and inspired, I need to find that voice somewhere.
