Snail Shell in Sand
EXIF: SONY DSLR-A700 | 1/60 sec | f 6.3 | 135.0mm (35mm equivalent: 202.0mm) | ISO 200

A few months ago over at Paul Lester's site he speculated on the question of whether photography was about the making of the image (see it, compose it, capture it) or if it had as much or more to do with the post-making process (processing, printing, sharing, possessing). I paraphrase the question because I don't have the patience to seek out the actual discussion. But he speculated on whether any of us photographers could ever go out and shoot our pictures then INTENTIONALLY erase the memory card. Interesting question.

On Saturday I went out shooting to try and wash away some negativity in my life. I hiked along a stream for an hour or so shooting one scene after another, then met up with an old friend and went with her to the campus at U Albany where she works and wandered around shooting a bunch more pictures. I was reasonably happy with the card-full of shots I had taken. Felt better for the physical exercise, for the conversation, and for the effort of making the photos.

I came home and prepared to upload the shots from my card to the computer. I opened the door to the CF. ... And it was EMPTY!!! NO f*#^&@g card in the camera!!! Did this diminish the value of the day for what it did for my soul? No. Sure, I wish I had some of those pictures, but I still have the memories of making them.

A Call For Your Assistance

I don't have a lot of daily visitors anymore (at least not ones that actually click on http://forgingahead.net) but I want to enlist your help. The Photo Center I write of often is having a Member Show in August. I need to select four photos to submit for the show and I am totally blocked.

If you have enjoyed the photos at forgingahead.net could you please take a few minutes and wander back in the archives and select one (or more than one if you are so moved) to advise me on which ones you think should be hanging on a wall for the world to see. Just find the picture you like and put a comment on it that says this is your pick and maybe, if you are up for it, a few words on why you selected it. I may see if I can include your recommendation on the photo description (fully credited of course).
