![]() It can be very hard, in these troubled times, to find an image appropriate for the Fourth of July, the most patriotic of all holidays in the American calendar. Politics and warfare make America less the model it once was. And, I too, as a social and political liberal, feel pushed away from my own heritage by the religious right who have laid claim to a special brand of "patriotism" that excludes any sort of dispute or difference of opinion. I found these flags marking the graves of Civil War, World War I, and World War II veterans. It seemed a true statement of patriotic fervor, that after so many years, we can still honor those long dead. Regardless of our political stripes, we all support our soldiers wherever they fight, whenever they fought. We can, however, still question the wisdom of fighting at all. My Picture of the day goes to just a photo a day. Enjoy. | |
