Old Bridge Pier

I am bouncing around geographically as I post these pictures from my vacation. I have many that I like and want to post, but I am also still taking daily pics so soon I may switch to more current subjects. Anyway, this is a bit of change of pace. This is the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. I felt that the B&W version of this shot was better than the color version which tended to look a little washed out.

Harpers Ferry, for those with little background in US History, became famous when an abolitionist named John Brown led a raid on the US Armory located here in 1859. But even before then, the location was a key transportation hub with a canal along the Potomac River that connected the east with the Ohio River and on to the west. Meriwether Lewis outfitted for his three year journey to the Pacific Ocean here in 1803. Now it is a National Historic Park.

I couldn't decide on a pic for the day. But I will keep looking!

Addendum 8/25/2005
For anyone who read my text above closely before this morning, please forgive my huge historical gaff. John Brown attacked the armory in 1859, not 1959 as I had put there before! Now corrected!
