Bly - Then and Now

As most of the world is aware, last Friday, Queen Elizabeth visited Jamestown. I am confident that she got no better of a tour of the place then we did three weeks ago. In my years as an archaeologist, I got to see some interesting folks -- like Emporer Hirohito -- but never had an opportunity to actually meet any of them. So it was quite a thrill for me to see two of my old colleagues and friends not only meeting the Queen under the scrutiny of the world, but also to see how attentive she seemed to their every word.

In 1974, a young California hippie came east to work on a project I was involved with. I was able to provide her a place to live that summer, and she became a close friend. We slipped in and out of contact with one another over the last 30-some years. But it was Bly Straub who helped make the arrangements for my visit to Jamestown last month, and it was the same Bly Straub who last week strolled the grounds with the the Queen. (The link leads to an Reuter's press photo of Bly with the Queen).

I don't think that 25ish year old woman who simply came to try out archaeology back in 1974 could ever begin to imagine that she would walk with royalty. Life can throw some interesting curves to us.
